A NAME IN THE SAND

BY H. H. GOULD.

Alone I walked the pebbled strand
A pearly shell was in my hand:
I stooped and wrote upon the sand
My name, the hour I had.

As onward from the spot I sped,
One lingering look behind I cast;
A wave came rolling high and fast,
And washed my lines away.

And so, methought, "at last we part,
With every mark on earth so small;
A wave of dark oblivion's pall
Will sweep across the spot
Where I have trod the sandy shore
Oftimes, and been to be no more
Of me, my name, the name I bear,
To leave no trace nor track.

And yet, with lily on the lea it bends
And holds the waters with its hands.
I know a breathing record stands
Inscribed against my name
Of all this mortal part hath writ,
Of all this thinking and but the age
And from these fleeting moments caught,
For glory, or for fame
