Full Text

That $400 Commutation.

The commutation tax, which appears so formidable in the eyes of the Copperhead Democracy, is regarded by them as one of the principal issues of the present campaign. Their assertion that it is unjust and oppressive, is placed before the public at every opportunity, through their newspapers and speakers. The State law in reference to this subject has been repeatedly misconstrued and misrepresented. The Copperheads, in order to display their recently begotten love for the soldiers, who they hitherto denounced as "Lincoln's Hirelings, "Hired Hessians, "Brutes "Hellians," &c., and in their zeal to ferret out some imaginary wrong done to them, deliberately make the false charge, that they are subject to the commutation tax-they are among the first exemptions. If the author of this statement did not know that he lied, he must be about as well posted in regard to our local laws, as that wise chap in Fremont, who informed his readers, that if a Union majority was secured in the next Legislature, a law would be enacted granting the right of universal suffrage, which would be signed by General Cox, if elected Governor.
