Under joint sponsorship of The Putnam Patriot and Windham County Transcript of Danielson the first annual Newspaper Trophy will be awarded this year to the winner of the Putnam-Killingly High football game to be played here Thanksgiving morning. The memorial souvenir will be given each year that a victor is crowned, according to a decision this week by the respective publishers. In the event of a tie no trophy will be given.

Although the award will not be available for presentation immediately following the contest, officials in charge indicated that school authorities, either in Putnam or Danielson, may plan a special assembly at some future date in order that appropriate recognition be given the formal acceptance.
The award is given not only as concrete evidence that the papers are wholeheartedly behind their respective standard-bearers, in the traditional game, but also to solidify the friendly relationship which exists between the two communities, despite athletic rivalry for supremacy.
In making the announcement here today both Mrs. Arthur S. Macdonald and Keyren "Casey" Cotter, co-owners of The Patriot, expressed much pleasure and satisfaction to join with William "Bill" Herklots of The Transcript in order that some permanent memorial be made available to the Turkey Day grid winner.
The Patriot co-owners have long shown a deep interest in Putnam High School activities; and plan to continue along this line. Miss Kay Macdonald, daughter of Mrs. Arthur S. Macdonald, is an alumna of P.H.S. and is currently director of the physical education department at Abbot Academy in Andover, Mass. Needless to remind, "Casey" Cotter, an alumnus, was one of the most talented athletes, especially in basketball, ever developed at P.H.S.
