J.J. Bird writes to the editor to clarify a telegram he sent on August 29, 1873, stating that Governor granted a 30-day respite for Campbell's execution. He explains his train interview with the governor between Joliet and Springfield, where the governor seemed to agree after reviewing petitions from Omaha citizens, ex-Governor Saunders, and letters from the editor and Judge Mulkey.

Mr. Editor: Allow me through the columns of your paper, to get the public mind aright concerning the telegram received by you from me on the 29th, stating that a respite of thirty days had been granted Campbell.
I had an interview with the governor on the train, between Joliet and Springfield, and having stated to him the nature of the petition and voluminous documents accompanying it, desired that he should grant a respite of the sentence thirty days, until he could have time and opportunity to investigate carefully the evidence in the case, as well as the petitions, among which was one emanating from the citizens of Omaha, signed by the members of the bar, ex-Governor Saunders and many prominent citizens of that place; also weighty private letters from your honor and Judge Mulkey.
The impression made by the language of the governor 'that he would send a telegram to the sheriff and review the matter,' was in my opinion explicit enough, and, in connection with his manner and apparent acquiescence in the arguments used by me in support of the necessity of the postponement of the execution of Campbell's sentence, was conclusive to my mind of his intention in the matter; in consideration of which I forwarded the above-mentioned telegram. Yours,
J.J. BIRD.

Main Argument
the telegram stating a 30-day respite for campbell was sent based on the governor's implied agreement during a train interview, supported by petitions and letters, to allow time for investigation of the case.
