Full Text

In noticing the defensive works which are constructing at the Pea Patch in the Delaware, the Louisiana Gazette expresses some dissatisfaction at what it deems neglect on the part of the government of the interests of that quarter, in not commencing also some additional defences on the southern waters. As we cannot, in charity, believe the Louisiana Gazette would have indulged itself in any reproaches of this kind, if it had previously seen the publication of the Engineer Department of the 11th of April, we presume that publication had not reached New-Orleans when the remarks of the Gazette were written—though 3 months is a much longer time than the mail usually occupies in going from this to that city. We trust, however, that the dissatisfaction of the Gazette will vanish when it shall have seen that the chief engineer did, in April last, advertise in the papers of the principal towns, east, west, north, and south, for proposals for the supply of materials for fortifications on the waters of Mobile, Lake Ponchartrain, Mississippi and Lake Barataria, as well as for three hundred carpenters, masons, and laborers, to proceed to those points. And we have the pleasure now of informing the Gazette, that extensive contracts have been made with individuals for the construction of the works contemplated on those waters by the government.
