Opens Vespers
The Sunday afternoon vesper services at Spelman College on the new academic year will be opened at three o'clock today. President Benjamin E. Mays, Morehouse College, the speaker, began his new duties at Morehouse College on July 1. His wide experience includes serving as pastor of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Atlanta, on the faculties of South Carolina State College and Morehouse College, executive secretary of the Tampa Urban League, as national student secretary of the YMCA, director of the Study of Negro Churches sponsored by the Institute of Social and Religious Research and dean of the School of Religion, Howard University. A member of the World's Committee of the YMCA, Dr. Mays attended the World YMCA Conference in Mysore, India, in 1937, and represented the YMCA of America at the Plenary Session of the World Conference in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1928. In 1937 he was a member of the Commission on Church, Community, and State at the Convention in Oxford, England and in 1939 he was one of the leaders in the Youth Conference held at Amsterdam, Holland.
The vesper services at Spelman are carried on as a vital part of the college program. They are open not only to the students and faculty of the University system but to all Atlanta citizens.
