Climbs Into Burning Building and Carries Her Out Unconscious.
Mrs. Mary McGlynn, an old woman who lived alone on the second floor of the two story frame house at No. 165 Eagle-st., Greenpoint, nearly lost her life early yesterday morning in a fire that destroyed the building. She was saved by Policeman Thomas Burke, of the Greenpoint-ave. station, who climbed up the porch in front of the house, and, after fighting his way through the flames and smoke, succeeded in carrying her to a window.
Policeman Burke saw smoke and flames bursting from the windows. The family of Mrs. Mary Powell, who lived on the ground floor, were awakened by the smoke and fled to the street. Policeman Burke tried to reach the top floor by the stairs, but flames drove him back. He then went up one of the posts of the porch and entered the burning apartments by a window. He found Mrs. McGlynn unconscious in bed. The policeman wrapped a sheet about her and, making a rope of the sheet, lowered her to the ground from one of the windows. The flames were then so close to Burke that he had to jump. His clothing was torn and partly burned.
