THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS
(Gastonia Daily Gazette)
Liquor bootleggers and distillers are opposing the passage of the beer bill in North Carolina, say advices from Raleigh, and that is one of the reasons why we believe beer should be legalized in the State. It will cut down the consumption of the cheap whiskey now being made and sold almost openly in our State.
Representatives in the General Assembly from counties where there is much bootlegging have said they will oppose the measure because the people in their counties are opposed to it. This goes to show that the hard liquor bootleggers are against beer; they know it will cut down the consumption of their own product.
Furthermore, if beer is not legalized in North Carolina, it will be bootlegged into the State and we shall have a double enforcement problem.
It has been claimed that at least 10,000 men will be given employment if beer is legalized. It is estimated that between 250 and 500 new motor trucks will be needed by distributors at once and a new field for employment opened up as soon as beer is legalized. Railroads will also get a large amount of new business.
If beer is an evil, it is the lesser of the two. Bootleg whiskey is far worse than beer.
