Full Text
It is all right, from a reverential standpoint, to commemorate in a fitting manner the natal anniversary of the patriot-president, George Washington, but if the spirit of the saint could come back and reanimate its former clayey habitation just now long enough to take in the full import of the situation as pertains to the government and the social compact in general, it would no doubt exclaim, "Alas! that my efforts and the sacrifices of my compatriots should so soon be brought to naught through the degenerating influence of seekers after self and pelf." But, let us be glad that it is no worse, and hope for better things to come.
