By the perusal of the following patriotic lines, our
readers will, no doubt, be highly gratified. We
have not yet had the pleasure of hearing the music
adapted to them by the Noble Lord whose name is
afterwards mentioned; but we are told that this com-
position is in spirit and in charms congenial to the
words of the ingenious Poet, whose verses now be-
fore us cannot be read by the most indifferent obser-
ver without much grateful sensibility for the happy
influence of the passions:—
THE DESERTER'S MEDITATION.
Written by John Philpot Curran Esq. set to music as a
Duct by the Earl of Barrymore; and lately performed
at Mrs. Harrison's and Bartleman's Concert.
If sadly thinking,
And Spirit sinking,
Could more than drinking,
Our griefs compose:
A cure for sorrow,
From Care I'd borrow,
And hope to-morrow
Might end my woes.
But since in wailing,
There's naught availing,
For death unfailing
Will strike his blow;
Then for the reason,
And for the season,
Let us be merry before we go.
A way-worn ranger,
To joy a stranger,
Through ev'ry danger,
My course I've run:
Now Death befriending,
His last aid lending,
My griefs are ending,
My woes are done:
No more a rover,
Or hapless lover—
Those cares are over—
"My cup runs low."
Then for that reason,
And for the season,
Let us be merry.
Before we go.
