Meridian, Miss. (ANP) - The white physician who attempted to save a Negro from the electric chair for the 1946 slaying of a local white night club operator, has been receiving several threats over the telephone, it was disclosed here last week. The victim of the threat is Dr. John G. Atwood who was active in the futile fight to save Eddie Patton from the chair and who was one of the pallbearers at Patton's funeral recently.
The physician was first threatened several months ago when he attempted to give evidence in behalf of Patton, on trial for the slaying of Jim Meadow in 1946. As a result. Patton received two stays of execution on appeals to higher courts. He was electrocuted at the Lauderdale courthouse recently.
According to Atwood, the threats upon his life were made in telephone calls to his home. He said he had not notified authorities and that he was "disregarding the threats."
