Storm Ravages Islands

Dreadful and devastating tropical storm Donna bypassed St. Croix and little of its effects were felt in St. Thomas. Here in St. Croix only heavy rain & high winds were experienced. The only reported damage was when two bolts of lightning struck communication lines at the Alexander Hamilton Airport putting the runway lights out and making it impossible to operate navigation and other vital communication aids.

Flooding was reported in St. Thomas but most of the damage apparently was done by rough seas and felling trees. No casualties were reported.

Many people were reported injured but there were no known deaths at press time.

ANGUILLA

This little island of 5,000 people was hit hard. Most people had to evacuate their homes to seek shelter in churches, schools and other strong buildings. Seventy five percent of the Anguillans are reported homeless while in complete reports have listed five dead.

ST. MARTEN

Communication was completely wiped out. Several attempts to contact the island up to Tuesday morning have failed. Saint Marten has an estimated population of 4,284.

BARBUDA

With a population of nine hundred this island was reportedly devastated and many sustained injuries.

ANTIGUA

Little damage was reported in this island of forty-six thousand people. The U. S. Radio Station was not damaged by the hurricane.

So once again people of the American Virgin Islands had much to be thankful for.

While many of our southern neighbors suffered the ravages of dreadful Donna.

PUERTO RICO

Casualties in the Humacao and Bayamon areas have been reported. Floods from rain and high tides were given as the cause.
