STRIKE ADDS TO WOES OF MIDDLE WEST
(Continued From Page 1)
experienced in many parts of the southwest and the absence of water caused families to travel many miles to sources.
The only relief the southwest could look for within the next two or three days, weather experts said, was problematical at best. It depended upon whether a low pressure area reported formed off the Florida coast would draw off the hot air believed spread over the southwest by a high pressure area in the same place.
Only rain reported today was in Oklahoma. Light showers there resulted only in keeping temperatures down to around 99 degrees, compared to readings of over 100 degrees of the last week.
Death lists swelled alarmingly over the nation and hospitals were overcrowded treating patients for various heat ailments.
Only the far west and the east appeared to have escaped the heat wave. San Francisco reported a maximum of 64 degrees; Los Angeles, 80. Yuma, Ariz., registered 92.
Hottest in Missouri was Mexico with 112 degrees. Kansas City mounted to over 104. Deaths in Kansas City due to the heat during the last two weeks reached 58 late yesterday. St. Louis total was 64, and Nebraska's 46.
