Women in Mexico are taking a
more aggressive part in the political
and social life of their country, and
have been particularly effective in
the fight against illiteracy, having
reduced the percentage of illiterates
by 30 per cent in the last 25 years.
Hundreds of school teachers have
been sent to the rural schools which
have multiplied considerably. The
open-air schools of painting are con-
sidered one of the most significant
developments in their modern edu-
cation work. Besides their interest
in schools the women living in large
cities have organized civic and social
betterment clubs. At the next elec-
tion in Mexico women will have
their first opportunity to cast their
votes. They have made great strides
even though the world outside hears
little of individuals who are respon-
sible for this progress.

Women who are good in marks-
manship are always a little surpris-
ing, probably because they have so
little practice. But when you hear
of a college dean who can hit the
bullseye every time, or nearly so,
she is hailed as a champion, even
though the demonstration is on the
college campus and before an infor-
mal gathering of students, as was
the case recently when Dean Vir-
ginia C. Gildersleeve of Barnard
College, New York cracked a whole
series of targets amid the cheers of
the undergraduates. She is a daugh-
ter of Colonel H. A. Gildersleeve, a
New York lawyer, who was an ex-
pert rifle shot.
