"On the 22d January at night, 11 days after leaving Boston, at the Eastward of the Grand Bank we had the misfortune to be overset by one of the most tremendous hurricane: fortunately by cutting away the main mast the brig righted with the loss of her deck load & two casks of water, and to add to our distress, the mate and a foremast hand, in going forward to cut away the fore top-gallant yards of the main stay, were both washed overboard. It would be tedious, nor is it essential to describe to you our situation for ten or twelve hours; it is enough that by the exertions of capt. Lynch and crew, which never can be surpassed, and the most providential interference we entered the Bay of Biscay, and made the isle Dieu N. E. of us—but the wind carrying a head and not having enough after sail to lay much upon the wind, we put into the first port we could make, which proved to be Les Sables D'Olonne, there were quarantined two days."
