Full Text

An Exemplary Buchanan Officer.

O. Maybee, Postmaster of Lexington, Sanilac county, Deputy U. S. Marshal, whilom Locofoco editor, has been fully committed in Detroit for robbing letters.

The Free Press, in extenuation, says: "The enormity of his crimes was only recently apprehended either here or at Washington;" but the Detroit Tribune says that even this weak defence lacks the merit of truth, and adds:

This is not true. Maybee was 'most known to be a mail robber, here and at Washington,' several months ago, and there is now on file at Washington a letter from the Hon. Z. Chandler, charging him with that crime, and calling on the Postmaster General to remove him. In reply to this demand, he was told by the officer that all the leading Democrats in Maybee's section of the State remonstrated against his removal. He was kept in office on that account after it was fully understood that he had been tried for the offense, and only acquitted upon some technicality or quibble.

The Democratic party, or the administration at least, must bear this dishonor of keeping such a man in office. They knew all about him, and did it with their eyes open. It is dishonorable for the Free Press and leading Democrats to desert their friend because they can no longer conceal his crimes.

Maybee was one of the large gang of counterfeiters and bogus-makers recently arrested at Lexington, by officer Moore, of Detroit.
