Capt. Morg. Bateman, of the steamer Mary Patterson, arrived from Cairo yesterday. He brings the intelligence that Cairo has been drained of all the troops stationed there, with the exception of 3000. Their destination was Missouri.
The steamer City of Alton left Cairo on Sunday night, under sealed orders, for Cape Girardeau, with 1000 men. It proceeded several miles above the point and landed, when the fact was communicated to a Missouri force in the neighborhood.
The Missourians surprised the party, took the steamer, and made the 1000 Cairoites lay down their arms. This rumor was currently reported at Columbus, when the Mary Patterson left, and generally believed.
Another rumor prevailed to the effect that a scouting party of one thousand Lincolnites had left Bird's Point for the interior of Missouri.
Up to Tuesday evening nothing had been heard from them, and, the belief was universal that they had been taken prisoners by the triumphant Missourians.
We trust that these rumors are correct, and the source from which the intelligence is derived inclines us to believe it.
