HAVANA, March 6-(R)- (Happy) Chandler, U. S. baseball commissioner, arrived today, first of a host of major league officials and players promising to turn Havana into a weekend baseball capital.
Chandler said he planned, conferences later in the week with Owner Clark Griffith of the Washington Senators and other high-ranking baseball figures on the status of former big leaguers who have signed to play in Mexico.
Griffith and 40 members of his squad are scheduled to arrive tomorrow night by plane from the Senators' training camp at Orlando, Fla., and will remain until March 18.
Members of the Boston Red Sox, accompanied by American League President Will Harridge, are due by plane Friday night from Sarasota, Fla., returning March 11 to their spring training camp.
Other baseball notables expected here over the weekend include Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey; Eddie Collins, general manager of the Red Sox; American League Umpire Cal Hubbard, and Wayne Allen, president of the new Florida International league.
The Senators and Red Sox meet Saturday afternoon in the first of two exhibition games at Tropical Stadium.
Sunday is "Clark Griffith" day during which the veteran Washington owner will receive a gold medal from the Cuban National sports commission "in recognition of his work on behalf of Cuban athletes." Following the ceremonies, the Senators and Red Sox will wind up the brief series.
