What is this article about?
From Paris: French authorities are accelerating naval construction at Cherbourg, planning to sink four new cones by June and repair damaged ones, with dykes sunk only nine feet so far; full completion hoped within four years. Fortifications are also ordered at Brest to secure the land side, enclosing a commanding eminence and repurposing the old citadel as a magazine, while materials continue to be gathered.

They are this year to hasten the works at Cherbourg; before June they will be able to sink four new cones; those which have suffered will be repaired before that time. The dykes or moles are only sunk nine feet, instead of fifteen or twenty, which they were reported to be. We hope this grand work will be entirely finished before the expiration of the four years they have allotted for them to be brought to perfection.
Some no less important works are ordered at Brest; they are going to finish the fortifications which are wanting on the land side, which is the only weak part of Brest. They will enclose in these fortifications, an eminence which commands the town, and the old citadel will then serve as a magazine to the port, for which it will be very useful. These works may suspend the buildings; but they are still busy in amassing materials, and new lighters are going to the North, to fetch from thence what is bought there for the King's account.
