A Key To Character.- It will be recollected that during the last Presidential contest, the now dominant party were wont to heap upon the preceding administration, abuse without stint, for having appointed its friends to office; denounced as a dangerous political sin, the removal from public office for opinion's sake; and solemnly declared, that under their Administration, there would be no removals from, nor appointments to, office in consideration of political tenets or party services. Such were the protestations of the demagogueing leaders of the "universal whig party," when seeking places of power and trust at the hands of the people: but no sooner had they been clothed with power, than they commenced a system of practice diametrically opposed to the doctrines they had preached and to which they owed their elevation.
The Washington correspondent of the New Era, states that he has compared the list of nominations now before the Senate for ratification, to supply the places of removals for opinion's sake, with the whole number of removals by the Presidents of the United States, from Washington to Van Buren, inclusive; and that Harrison and Tyler made more removals within three months, than were made by the other eight Presidents in fifty three years. Will the thousands who voted for the present administration in consequence of its pledge of no proscription for opinion's sake, continue to co-operate with those who have thus deceived them?
To give color of excuse, to the removals which it was determined to make, the present administration, on coming into power, made known its determination to hurl from office, all such as interfered in elections ; and forthwith commenced an almost indiscriminate removal of those dissenting from its political tenets, on a charge of interfering or having interfered in elections. And to whom were the offices given? To the most violent and unscrupulous partisans, who had rendered the greatest service in their desperate struggle for power. This is no idle, empty charge, but a truth, which no one, conversant with the history of the times, will attempt to controvert.
