Bullet in Brain.
Dallas, Texas: J. A. Mays, president of the Elk City National Bank of Elk City, O. T., fired a bullet into his brain at the Dallas county jail last night and surgeons say he is liable to die at any time. He has been unconscious since the shooting. Mays was arrested at Greenville, Texas, several days ago by United States officers charged with being short a large sum of the bank's money. He was brought to Dallas and United States Marshal Finks held him in $5,000 bond, which he was unable to give. Deputy United States Marshal Warden was about to start with Mays for Elk City last night, and had him in custody of the officer at the jail. Friends of Mays had furnished him a valise with clothing in it, and he expressed a desire to get some linen from the valise. When the valise was unlocked Mays ran his hands inside, but instead of taking out linen he quickly drew out a pistol and before any one could know what was happening he shot himself.
Later—Mays died shortly after midnight.
