Full Text

MR. Editor: - Several citizens of the county who are unable to coincide with the views of the gentlemen comprising what they term the Temperance Convention, at Hyde Park, February 17th, desire to present the name of Hon. Elisha Bentley, as candidate for County Commissioner.

In presenting a second candidate, they do not wish to say directly or by implication anything against the personal character of the candidate already nominated. They cheerfully concede that Judge Belding is a man of honorable character and strict integrity, and of business capacity well fitted for the place. It is in full recognition of all the merits of Judge Belding that they have selected to run against him a man of equal standing and high-toned character.

The objection they have to voting for Judge Belding is that his election will be claimed as an indorsement of the extreme views of those who nominated him, and give occasion to a kind of crusade to enforce their radical notions.

Although Mr. Bentley has not been nominated by any formally called caucus, his nomination has received the sanction of a large number of the most reputable and influential men of the county, comprising greater numbers than the convention that nominated Judge Belding, and equally reputable.

We trust the matter may be fairly presented to the people of the county, and that they will decide whether they prefer extreme men and measures or moderate ones.

Those who are satisfied with such administration of the law as shall secure good order, peace and harmony in the community, will support Mr. Bentley. - Those who think good can come from starting up petty neighborhood quarrels and prosecutions - who desire to have continuous wranglings, and make neighbors spies upon each other, will vote for Judge Belding and a ram-rod administration of the liquor law.

We publish by request, a communication presenting the name of Hon. Elisha Bentley for County Commissioner. Our own opinion in the matter has already been fully expressed in favor of Judge Belding, and though those opposed to him have selected a good man for the place, we trust Mr. Belding will be the successful candidate.
