SACRAMENTO, July 21. (U.P.)
San Francisco's city officials want national guardsmen to remain on the waterfront a few days until the strike situation is definitely quieted, Theodore Roche, police commissioner, said today.
Troops have been removed from the commercial district and quartered along the waterfront pending withdrawal orders from Gov. Frank F. Merriam.
Roche, who is head of the state department of motor vehicles, came here to discuss department matters with the governor.
He said that breaking of the teamsters' strike was an important step toward final settlement of the bay trouble but that officials held it would be advisable to keep troops on hand for a few days.
The governor had given no definite indication when troops would be ordered out of San Francisco.
He said the removal probably would await a request from Mayor Angelo Rossi.
