A story which will bear telling has arrived from Deer Lodge by grapevine telegraph. It relates that on election day Dr. A.H. Mitchell, R. S. Kelley, and other leading Democrats of the town, took up a collection amounting to $35 with which to pay for press report, in order that they might know in advance of the report published by the daily papers the Democratic majorities in the States in which elections were held. The first advices were not of an encouraging nature, and subsequent dispatches convinced them they were paying for news opposite to what they had hoped to receive. The utterances given vent to were such as only a true Democrat can pronounce. The dispatches are kept on file by the ex-Coroner, and will forever be a reminder that the result of elections, like other less wonderful inventions, is not always to be predicted beforehand.
