Full Text

Sheriffs' Settlements.

Wednesday last was the day fixed by law for the Sheriffs to settle with the Auditor and Treasurer, for this year's revenue of the respective counties; and we are gratified to state, that they have all, with only one or two exceptions, promptly settled and paid up their liabilities. Those one or two defaulting Sheriffs, it is supposed, have failed to make their settlements, in consequence of a misconstruetion of the relief law passed at the last session of the Legislature, giving the Sheriffs till the 1st of January last, to settle up the revenue for last year. It was a special and not a general law, as it has unfortunately been understood by them, or which, we suppose, they will have to pay the forfeit, as the Auditor possesses no power to make allowances for mistakes.
