The foregoing is the summary of the tally sheets of yesterday's school election. Unusual interest was manifested in the meeting, and there was a considerable crowd of electors present during the entire day.
Messrs. Hicks and Voorhees are re-elected trustees for three years and the board is authorized to issue bonds of the district in the sum of $35,000 to run fifteen years, and to bear interest at 6 per cent.
These resolutions were introduced by Judge Bergman and adopted without opposition:
Resolved, That all monies which may be needed during the ensuing year for the purchase of school house sites or erection of school buildings be raised by the sale of bonds of the school district or from any proceeds arising from the sale of real estate belonging to the district.
Resolved, That the board be given authority to purchase such sites and to build such buildings as in their judgment shall be deemed best or necessary.
The adoption of the second resolution confirms the purchase of a new site for the south side school, authorizes the sale of the present one, and leaves the building of a separate high school building and an east end school to the discretion of the board.
A separate high school and a new south side school will be built at once, the former near the park and the latter on Warren avenue, between Eighth and Ninth streets.
It is not believed that the board sees the immediate necessity for an east end school at Pebrican and Twentieth, and the majority seem to doubt if the necessity exists. Figures presented yesterday showed conclusively that its erection this year would be an extravagance.
A special tax was voted in the amounts here given for the purposes indicated:
To supply deficiency in teacher's fund $12,500
To build, furnish and repair schoolhouses 6,000
School libraries and board stationery 100
Contingent fund and books for indigent scholars 1,000
District library 100
Total $19,700
Mrs. Geo. Masten, Mrs. Recker and F. S. Hebard were elected judges and T. F. Durbin and Elisha Ware clerks.
On Sunday morning the Sun announced that the question of a new Twentieth street school would come up at 2 in the afternoon. A lady who appeared at that hour and learned that the matter had been disposed of in the morning was very much disappointed. She became quite angry, and while clamoring for a new school voted against the bonds and did not vote for the trustees at all.
