Richardson Is Puzzling Police at Phoenix Today.

Phoenix, Ariz., April 24.—The police today admitted that they are puzzled by the statement of G. C. Richardson, held in connection with the fatal assault on Rabbi Alfred G. Laffe in a San Francisco hotel on April 4. Richardson was linked with the slaying by a diary found on his person telling in detail how he met the rabbi at Golden Gate park and accompanied the latter to the hotel; how he was awakened in the early morning, and in a fight to protect himself from assault, struck the rabbi repeatedly over the head with a cuspidor, and how he finally washed the blood from his hands and walked out of the hotel.
