NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) Some 15,600 elephants living in 16,000 square miles of Tsavo National Park are eating an estimated 2,600 tons of vegetation daily. But the Royal National Parks Executive Committee has ruled out an immediate campaign to thin out the elephant population.
Col. Mervyn Cowie, parks director, said the government will ask funds from international wildlife organizations to determine how many elephants the park can support. "These vast elephant herds are the world's heritage," he explained.
