Cobell Kills Grizzly With Gun and Hatchet

Irvin Cobell reported yesterday he killed a three-year old grizzly bear Monday at the head of Milk River, the south fork, using a 30-06 rifle and a hatchet.

Cobell said he was looking for a stray cow and had only two shells in his rifle when he came upon the bear. He hit and wounded the grizzly in the shoulder with the first shot, then missed with the second.

The crippled animal approached him to attack, and Cobell, riding horseback, managed to stun the animal with the hatchet before dismounting. Repeated blows about the head completely subdued the grizzly, he said.
