AN ISLAND WITH ITS INHABITANTS SWALLOWED UP IN THE SEA.

New Orleans Picayune: Some days ago earthquake shocks were noted on the sensitive instruments at the seismic observatory at Loyola College in this city, but no information was had as to the whereabouts of the disturbance.

It now comes out that after repeated earthquake shocks on the coast of Costa Rica, on Saturday the Island of Ilepango, off Salvador, slowly sank into the sea.

Only a few inhabitants numbering 150 to 170 persons got boats escaped to the mainland, but there were not enough conveyances for the entire population, as no provision had been made for such wholesale destruction of the people. The scant news received shows it must have been attended by terrifying occurrences.
