No Thanks to Mr. Specht that He Was a Happy Father, So He Was Sent Up
His supper wasn't good enough for John Specht, of 205 Eldridge street, last night, and he beat his wife so that Policeman Kappes heard her shrieks and locked up the husband in a cell at the Eldridge street station.
When the case was called at the Essex Market Police Court this morning the wife did not appear. She sent the following letter to Justice Duffy:
"MR. JUDGE: I was taken sick last night. I gave birth to a son. I am without money. I leave it to your judgment to do with him as you think best."
Policeman Kappes said that he had been to the house to get Mrs. Specht to come to court, but he found her fondling the new baby. He believed she would rather have him discharged than punished.
"Let me go home to my wife and child," pleaded the prisoner.
"Much you care for her to beat her at such a time. I won't let you go. One month in the Workhouse."
