Full Text
Expurgated. The Ohio Statesman, the central organ of the Ohio Democracy, thus speaks in relation to the Lecompton Constitution:
Even if we concede that the people may and will amend this instrument next Spring, what follows? Why it will be incontrovertible proof that a constitution was forced upon them against their wishes, in contravention of the Nebraska Act, and in violation of a thousand pledges. This being so, it is our belief that a vote in favor of the Constitution of the infamous 'twenty eight,' will forever damn the Northern Democrat who casts it in Congress. In the emphatic words of the Philadelphia Press and the Chicago Times, 'He seals his doom,' by falsifying the record of his party, and betraying the trust of his constituents.
