WASHINGTON This is the month baseball takes over the sports pages again After a lapse beginning in October. March comes in like a lion for the diamond fan.
The Major League teams are responsible They go to Florida or Arizona and begin spring training.
Just the word "spring" in spring training adds a bit of zest and anticipation to the winter atmosphere- as it begins to appear in Florida or western datelines.
March is the crucial month for Major League teams in some instances. In many years the team which gets off to a fast break because of good condition attained in spring training. goes all the way A team sluggish at the beginning of the season may never hit its stride, or hit it too late.
The pitchers, particularly sharpen up in March. By mid- April some are in top condition and start on their way to 20-game circle. The last two weeks in March are the best in which to gauge the possibilities of the teams.
It is true, however, that the team which burns up the Grapefruit Circuit may not burn up the league over the long stretch But it is also true that the Grapefruit winner does have something in his favor The records are really not meaningless, as some contend.
Note the pitching consistency of the clubs, their play under pressure in extra innings. the ability of the good hitters to hit at the right time (this will offer a clue whether they have found their batting eye) and other signs of team abilities. They indicate, quite often. what one can expect at the opening of the regular season.
Milwaukee and New York will probably be favored regardless of their spring exhibition games In fact they have with opponents all season.
