WASHINGTON- U. S. Attorney Bernard J. Flynn, acting for the Office of Price Stabilization, named six Baltimore, Maryland operators of cigarette vending machines in heavy treble damage actions, alleging violation of OPS regulations.
The suits allege that after last November 1, the date the new Federal excise tax of one cent per pack became effective, they increased the price of cigarettes per pack by more than the amount of the tax increase. The treble damage actions total $39,448.86.
These actions, according to OPS Enforcement Director O'Malley, are indicative of how spending of "a penny here and a penny there" affects the cost of living, inasmuch as customers purchasing cigarettes from vending machines of these six operators paid an alleged penny per pack over ceiling during the stated periods.
