WASHINGTON, D.C.-(NNPA)
Action against the National Theatre by the Committee for Racial Democracy in the Nation's Capital and seven persons who filed suit for ticket refunds, was termed "fraudulent and deceitful" last Friday by attorneys for the theater.
The theater's reply to the suits, filed in Municipal Court, also charge the racial organization with violation of the anti-trust laws, alleging that the committee was engaged in a general scheme to force the theater to admit colored people and by means of picket lines, boycott and advertising seeks to force the theater to close.
Attorneys for the theater, Robert E. Kline, Jr., and James M. Proctor, Jr. stated that the tickets were purchased by white persons for colored guests.
Violated Printed Conditions
This, said the theater's answer to the suits, violated printed conditions on the ticket which stated the tickets are "not transferable," and are "sold subject to the known policy of the theater as to persons entitled to admittance. If presented by any person not conforming to that policy admission will be refused and no refund made."
Counsel for the theater also argued that the demands for refund were made too late.
The suits are slated to be tried March 31.
