Full Text

The arrest of the judges and commissioners of election in Petersburg was a scheme gotten up by a few radicals to accomplish something, in which they were fortunately defeated. By their misrepresentations, they expected to have a military force stationed in Petersburg and the government of the city secured to military authority who might be under the control of the few radicals who created the disturbance. But in every move they were disappointed. The commissioners were required to give bail upon the ruling of the U. S. Commissioner Pleasants that men charged with crime are required by law to prove themselves innocent. The charges against them were not sustained by the evidence, and their acquittal is only a matter of time.
