"The Last Negro"
Under the heading of "The Week" Roscoe Simmons widely read column writer for Negro newspapers, in his release last week said: "Shooting off his head is the daily pastime of a West Indian. American "colored" people take their jaw and think a West Indian to be something superior, when, as a matter of fact, a West Indian Negro is the last Negro in the world."
Mr. Simmons was never so wrong in his life. American Negroes do not think West Indians to be superior, but West Indians haven't the inferiority complex of American Negroes and they act in a manner superior to us folks in these U. S. When it comes to 'shooting off his head' most West Indians can be given credit for talking about something worth while. One West Indian has done more to arouse the racial consciousness of black people than all American Negroes living or dead. We mean Garvey. Far from being the last Negro in the world it can be said of Garvey, a West Indian, he is the first Negro to proclaim the unity and solidarity of the black people throughout the world. Marcus Garvey, West Indian, is the mightiest prophet who has appeared among us in fifty years. American Negroes can profit much from West Indians. Observe their industry, their skill in trades, their independent manner and courage. Contrast them with the American Negro's shiftlessness, unskilled hands, servile manner and cowardice. If there is a "last Negro" it is not the West Indian. We opine the "last Negro" would most likely be found north of the Mason and Dixon line in these United States. And this writer is not southern born or a West Indian either.
