Tricks of the Opposition.—We republished on Tuesday from the Albany Argus, the article announcing Judge Savage's declining the office of Treasurer, coupled, as this notice was, with a very insidious paragraph, purporting evidently to speak the Chief Justice's sentiments, and certainly intended to be so understood, alleging that "at no time has the Chief Justice designed to consent, nor will he in any degree consent, in opposition to the regular republican nomination, to the use of his name as the Administration candidate for Governor."

We then said we would wait for the development: it has come in the conclusive disavowal, authorized by the Chief Justice himself, of this impudent paragraph. It is taken from the Albany Morning Chronicle of yesterday.

Chief Justice Savage.—The Albany Argus, recently, after noticing the fact that Chief Justice Savage has declined accepting the appointment of Treasurer of the United States, took occasion to add—

"It is proper to add, as the subject has been drawn into the newspaper speculations of the day, that at no time has the Chief Justice designed to consent, nor will he in any degree consent, in opposition to the regular republican nomination, to the use of his name as the administration candidate for Governor."

The tenor and tone of this article were such as seemed to impart that it was published by the authority, and with the sanction of the distinguished individual of whose sentiments and feelings it professes to speak so confidently. Such, we know, has been the general impression respecting it.

But we are authorised by Chief Justice Savage himself, to say; that this article was inserted in the Argus not only without his having been consulted in relation to it, but entirely without his knowledge, consent, or approbation.

We know that between Mr. Adams and Gen. Jackson as the candidates for the Presidency, the sentiments of the Chief Justice have been uniformly in favor of the former; and we have the most positive assurances that those sentiments have undergone no change.

As to the office of Treasurer, the Chief Justice declined it from considerations purely personal, not political. Those considerations have been frankly made known to us; but as they are such as do not concern the public, and are not at all of a political nature, we forbear to publish them.

The impudent deception here attempted upon the people of this State, is of a piece with all that is done by the faction at Albany, that under the name, and invoking the usages of the republican party, seek to terrify men into acquiescence in their selfish plans. And too often do they succeed. Too often does the fear of being denounced by their venal and eleemosynary press, deter men otherwise bold and honest, from speaking what they feel, and acting up to their opinions.

In this respect the Chief Justice has set an example that will be of beneficial influence.
