Full Text

CACTUS BURCH.—This gentleman has recovered from his fright, occasioned by the publication of his celebrated Pacific Republic letter, and the furiously indignant reception given to it all over the State. Under certain contingencies he still favors the Cesarean-McDuff operation of carving California from the womb of the Union into a distinct nation. An extract from a speech which he made a couple of weeks ago at Weaverville, is thus reported by the Trinity Journal:

"He reviewed his Congressional career; defended his famous Cactus letter, and was very denunciatory of the press of this State for the misconstructions which had been placed upon it. He said the letter was a private one, addressed to a friend, not even hinting at secession: that in that letter he expressed his warm attachment to the Union; yet the California papers had called him a secessionist, a favorer of a Pacific Republic, etc. Before the conclusion of the speech, he clearly and distinctly announced himself in favor of a Pacific Republic, in the event of the separation of the Southern from the Northern States."
