DEATH OF MR. MADISON.
Our City Council have determined to fire minute guns this afternoon, and to request the flags to be displayed at half mast during the day, in token of respect to the memory of James Madison.
By way of preamble to the resolution, the City Council say—
Whereas since the last meeting of the City Council, intelligence has been received of the death of JAMES MADISON, the able defender of our National Constitution. a patriot and a statesman, who after having worthily and honorably performed the duties of various and important public offices both in the government of his native State and of the United States, was twice called by the voice of the American people to discharge the high trust of the Chief Magistracy of this nation—
It is wonderful that our federal gentry find out the sterling patriotism, and transcendent abilities of eminent democrats, after they have ceased to stand in the way of their aspiring ambition.
Thus death changed even Thomas Jefferson in the view of the Federal aristocracy, into the great, the illustrious, and the patriotic Jefferson; and even funeral honors were bestowed on him at his death—yet no two men were ever subjected to more vile calumny and abuse than were Jefferson and Madison by these federalists, while sustaining their country in the hour of peril, and exerting all their powers to protect her rights, and defend her honor.
