A Hitch in the Ceremony.

The gas light was turned down, and the clock in the hall had just struck 10. They were seated together, and that means not far apart on the parlor sofa. His arm had glided about her supple form, and her blonde head rested on the padded portion of his best coat. They had been silent for the past half hour, contented with simply existing in each other's company, and blind to the great hard world about them. At least he looked down into her great dreamy eyes and whispered:

Yet a little while and you will always be close to my side, darling.

Yes, she murmured, a faint blush mantling her pretty rounded cheeks.

We will glide down the stream of life wafted by the wings of cupid, he gushed pressing her still closer to his manly form.

We will, she sighed, closing her eyes, and letting her soul float away into realms of fairy bliss.

When I come home at night, tired from my daily toil; you will be there to greet me with a kiss,—

That reminds me, she said, suddenly breaking away from his embrace and assuming a pretty business air.

We have agreed upon the day of our wedding, have we not, dear?

Yes, Love, and—

Of course, but we have not settled upon the way we are to be married, she said, looking at him from under her dark, silken lashes.

Why, of course, darling. I shall leave that to you, letting his arm once more furtively wander about her sylph like form. Let it be in the church or at home, as it suits you best.

I—that is—I have a request to make, she said.

Well, dear?

You say you will leave it all to me?

To be sure, which shall it be?

Well, if you please, neither, she said blushing.

Why, how is that? he exclaimed excitedly, you surely do not mean to throw me over at this late—O, you do not mean—

No, no! she cried, only if you do not mind, suppose—suppose we are married by the Mayor?

O hum, yes, to be sure, he ejaculated, but mind he is only to take one.

Only one, she echoed, and then they fell into another reverie.
