Full Text

Protection Against Borers.—Last week we published an item copied from a Stockton paper, stating that many of the trees in San Joaquin county had been destroyed by borers, which entered the tree on the south side near the ground. An observing friend, who is never slow to profit by the hints which nature gives, confirms this fact in regard to the peculiar habits of the borer, and adds that their ravages may be entirely prevented by simply placing a shingle in the ground in such a manner as to shade the south side of the tree where they are accustomed to enter.
