Full Text
Campbell Quarterly Sessions were held last week. Upwards of one hundred and twenty judgments were obtained. Several very heavy suits, of considerable moment, and long standing, were determined.--This spirited and equitable dispatch is ascribed measurably to the determination of a number of young, intelligent, and independent magistrates, united with a few old ones, of the same stamp, who are resolved to sweep the docket in two more Terms, and wipe off the reproach of Court Delay which had become proverbial-a bye word, in Campbell.
We are acquainted with a few of the gentlemen lately commissioned to the peace. Some of them we know to be men of business, character, independence and punctuality. Their names, united as above, will be a guarantee for fidelity, justice and dispatch.- But should expectation be disappointed they shall hear of it, unless it can be clearly proved that the malady is not in the man, but the Bench. It is a most unquestionable truth, that some passible hearts and tolerable heads, in times past, have been much transmuted and rendered vertiginous (hard words)by place and elevation. The disorder is said to be irresistible when it seizes on certain parts and takes an upward direction. We are not hopeless, as we shall hold their Worships upon their honour.

Under existing arrangements, Campbell can conveniently dispense with the services of Justices, stuck round with law suits, and beset with eternal litigation. We have in "days of yore," beheld men of this description, solemnly ascend the judgment seat-aye, and descend too, not with the most righteous intent, or for the most equitable purpose.--The system cannot be perfect where such matters exist, and are tamely tolerated--The most inoffensive and virtuous citizen may sometimes be constrained to resort to law, for the maintenance of his rights or in defence of his person, or privileges; but the habitual, practical, litigant should not, if possible, be permitted to stain the seat of justice, by participating, in any shape, in its dispensation or duties.
