Senator Wheeler Offers Resolution Ordering Removal of United States Forces From Nicaragua
Washington, Jan. 3.—Contending that the Diaz government in Nicaragua never should have been recognized by the United States, Senator Wheeler (Democrat) of Montana introduced a resolution today demanding immediate withdrawal of the American naval forces from that country.
The measure charged that the American sailors and marines were blocking the efforts of Dr. Juan Sacasa to restore "constitutional government." The order of Rear Admiral Latimer in declaring Puerto Cabezas a neutral zone and the establishment of a censorship there were cited as "hindrance" to the Sacasa movement's success.
The Diaz government, it was charged in the resolution, was illegally elected, and "it must have been apparent to the state department that Diaz could not maintain a stable government without the aid of American gunboat and American marines."
Dr. T. S. Vaca, Washington representative of Sacasa, in statement asserted that "not a single Mexican officer is to be found in Sacasa's army," but at the same time declared the sailing of the United Fruit company's ship Abangaria with an airplane and bombs for the Diaz forces was ample justification for any assistance that might be given to Sacasa by Mexico.
The Abangaria is said to have sailed from New Orleans December 29 to the Nicaraguan west coast.
Mexico City, Jan. 3.—Having previously ignored the declaration of Adolfo Diaz, the Conservative president of Nicaragua, on the ground that his charges do not deserve to be dignified with an official reply, the Mexican government probably will continue that policy regarding his latest manifesto.
President Diaz has charged Mexico with interference in Nicaraguan affairs and lending support, together with arms and munitions, to the Sacasa Liberal government in Nicaragua and with aiming at securing a dominating influence in the Central American republics.
The Mexican government and Sacasa's representative in Mexico City already are officially on record as denying categorically any official Mexican participation whatever in Nicaraguan affairs, and, so far as the Mexican government is concerned, its present attitude seems to be to let the matter rest there.

Event Details
Senator Wheeler introduced a resolution contending the Diaz government in Nicaragua was illegally elected and reliant on US naval forces and marines, which are blocking Dr. Juan Sacasa's efforts to restore constitutional government, citing Rear Admiral Latimer's neutral zone declaration in Puerto Cabezas as a hindrance. Dr. T. S. Vaca denied Mexican officers in Sacasa's army but justified potential Mexican aid due to US support for Diaz via the Abangaria ship sailing from New Orleans on December 29 with airplane and bombs. Mexican government ignores Diaz's charges of interference and support for Sacasa, denying any official participation.
