By a Gentleman from Woodbury in Connecticut, we hear that the late cold Weather began rather sooner there than here; they had a very severe Frost on Saturday Night the 27th of December, on Sunday the 28th it rained a little, and froze hard, on Monday Evening it began to Snow, and when the Snow was about 6 Inches deep, cleared up very cold, and continued so till Sunday Night 4th Instant, when it grew warm, began to rain, and continued raining hard without Intermission, till Tuesday Night—that whole Day the Rain poured in such Torrents that it seemed rather like Streams than Drops, the like had not been remembered.—The Snow and Ice were entirely thawed, and the Ground being frozen, could receive none of the Water, which occasioned greater Floods than ever were known before, New-Milford Bridge, 13 Miles above Woodbury, on Stratford River, was first carried away; when this Gentleman crossed Woodbury Bridge, which is above 100 Yards in Length, the Water was not up to it by 6 Feet, but in less than an Hour after, the whole Bridge was carried away from End to End, and with great Difficulty he got to York—Not a Bridge on the Road except at Norwalk and King's Bridge, left standing. In Reading, New Town, and the large Township of Danbury, not a Mill or Bridge left standing, and supposed to be the same all over the Country. In Reading one Man had 27 Sheep drowned, and another saw 25 floating down the Stream at Norwalk, where the Saw-Mill was entirely destroyed, and the Grist-Mill much shattered; 6 Mills that stood on the Stream at Stamford were all carried away, together with a Quarter of an Acre of Ground, and Part of a Stone Store-House which stood at some Distance from the Water.
