Last Sabbath was one of those days upon which memory loves to fasten. Not alone because it was the first day of the week.-As Sunday, we think it had no more than its usual significance, but it marked a transition in the weather, so sudden, so extreme, so unexpected, and yet so pleasant as to make it like Christmas or Easter, a joyful day, and one long to be remembered.

The clouded canopy, and the bleak winds, and the frost and the driving sleet and snow which prevailed all last week. Ugh! How it makes us shudder to recall the wry faces, and the bitter complaining words. How full of ungratefulness was everybody then. No look of pleasure, no word of thankfulness:'no act of disinterested friendship despair was written on every countenance, and spite seemed ready to do the behest of vengeance.

When Sabbath morning dawned, the earth smiled under the influence of a genial sun, the clouds gathered their fragments together and rolled away, the vernal wind glided softly forth, the birds caroled, the cattle sauntered leisurely out into the sunshine and looked glad. Nature seemed in a happy mood.

Soon the Church-bells began to ring, and the people to pour forth into the streets, the children skipped along like spring lambs, intoxicated with the odor of clover blossoms, young maidens with lustrous eyes beamed love-lorn glances upon their timid swains. The husband and wife of middle age strolled along with pleasant chat- forgetting the fact and the occasion of yesterday's dispute in the newborn gladness of the present hour. The aged walked more nearly erect and with greater elasticity of step-some of them having forgotten to take the accustomed staff, and the air seemed fraught with new exhilaration and increased vigor.

The houses of worship were well filled, and there breathed over each assembly a spirit of peace for a long time hitherto unknown. It takes dreary days to teach us that the goodness of the Creator does not ebb and flow like the tides, and that He is just as kind to us when he frowns as when he smiles.
