Tank-Carrying Airplanes New Nazi Weapon-Claim

ROOSEVELT Field, N. Y., May 28 (UP)--A German refugee told aeronautical engineers here today, that the "secret weapon" Adolf Hitler was holding in reserve for the invasion of Great Britain consisted of a fleet of the world's largest airplanes, each capable of carrying a 30-ton tank.

The refugee, who fled Germany just before the outbreak of war said the planes were built in a camouflaged plant in the Black forest, in the vicinity of his home.

He said 200 of the tank-carrying planes, larger than any of the commercial planes now in use in the United States, had been produced by September of last year.

The refugee said he feared reprisals for himself or members of his family if his name should be disclosed.

According to his story, the planes have a wing spread of 200 feet and are equipped with four motors, each of 1,200 horsepower. The tanks are taken aboard through a trap door in the bottom of the planes.

The "kangaroo" planes, according to the informant, are similar in appearance to the German Dornier plane and the Pan-American flying boat. The Pan-American clippers now lift a load of 42 gross tons.

The fuselage is a massive shell the German said. The tank, or light field artillery piece, is rolled under the fuselage, then lifted through the trap door in its bottom by means of a portable hydraulic lift apparatus. The inside of the fuselage is equipped with fittings for the anchoring of the tank, or field piece.

When the tank or cannon is aboard, the trap door is closed, and the plane is then ready to be flown whenever needed. Upon landing, the artillery or tank is unloaded out.

Aeronautical engineers at Roosevelt Field said it is feasible for a plane of the size described to carry a 30-ton tank.
