Full Text
From the Macaroni Magazine of October 1772.
STATE of the present FASHIONS.
GENTLEMEN.
Hats having Gold Loop, the full Moon Button, together with the triple Row of Binding round the Crown, are totally exploded, and succeeded by a single narrow Looping, broad Hatband, and Pin's Head Button; the single Button on each Side the Head still continues in Undress; in full Dress, the three Buckles zigzag, with the Foretop a la Greque; the Roes are entirely confined to Cheapside, and the Bags increasing every Day.
The late stunting of the Coats has promoted the Growth of the Skirts, the Pockets of which are at present in a Capacity for holding conveniently a tolerable sized Muslin Handkerchief and a Smelling Bottle.
Shoes decreased in Heels two Inches, low quartered and sharp pointed, and cut like a Butter Boat, to show the Whole of the Clock of the Stocking, which is of a different coloured Silk. It is thought, however, this Fashion will not hold long; as two Macaronies have been confined to their Rooms with sore Throats, in Consequence of their taking Cold in that Quarter.
LADIES.
The Toupees are apparently decreasing, and Jewels partly supply the Place of Front Curls; the back Part of the Head en chenouille, with the Side Curls pretty much the same; the Height of Stays on a Par. with sharp pointed Peaks; the Projection in Front rather on the Increase: Stomachers, three Rows of Plaits upwards; a single Breastknot and Sleeveknots of the same Silk; triple Flounces to the Sleeves, twelve, nine, and five Inches; triple Ruffles on the Outside, eighteen, fifteen, and eleven Inches; Inside, six, four, and two Inches.
On the Petticoat of the Negligee a Frill comes all round, plaited next the Tail; six Inches above that is a Flounce a Quarter of a Yard deep only in the Front; close over that is another Frill as on the Bottom, all of the same Silk; Trains nine Inches and a Half; full Dress as usual, with larger Trains.
Hours of Employment for both Ladies and Gentlemen.
Riding Hour, eleven; Breakfast, from that till one; Visiting, and Lounging, from one till three: from three till four, Dressing; Dinner, four to five; Evening Visits, from five to eight; Length of Ditto, five Minutes (except on Assignation) publick Places, from six to eleven; from eleven to three, as you like it; Bed Time, three in the Morning.
