Full Text

The most magnificent achievement in the life of man is not the abundance of material things accumulated, but instead its how much they had given of themselves in service to others.

Art Oleson can be counted with the multitudes of public spirited citizens that serve in anonymous humility.

Art was born in East Hartford and settled in Newington many years ago.

He lives at 28 Mountain View Drive with his charming wife Jessie and their 11 year old daughter, Gloria. They also have a daughter, Betty Jane, married to Mr. James Eisenhaure of Litchfield and a son, Arthur Howard in the building business with Art.

Art was a constable for fourteen years, Probation Officer 4 years, Deputy Sheriff 2 years, Board of Assessors 4 years,

Town Plan Commission 4 years,

member of the town committee,

charter member of the local American Legion and is also a Shriner.

All of these important positions have one thing in common in that they are veined to the realm of humanity in its frailty and infallability, in its dignity and despair there comes a knowledge pregnant with wisdom.

Art remembers most of all the constabulary days of prohibition when a raid was staged on premises suspected of distilling liquor,

In a sudden visit to the establishment the alert and surprised bootlegger through the kettle with the evidence out of the window and Art dove right out after it.

His fellow officers ran out to his assistance in the belief that Art had kicked the kettle.

It was a sigh of relief when they discovered Art sitting on the ground holding the kettle in his lap-- with the evidence gurgling out of the spout.

That was many years ago, but in certain respects things are much the same because Art can now lean back as he watches TV and muse the wording of the sage who said My cup runneth over.
