Full Text

The great war with Mexico, which the Secretary of the Treasury, in his memorable private despatch to a leaky correspondent in Baltimore seems to think might intervene. to prevent the loaning of the surplus revenue to the States may become. we apprehend, more real than is anticipated. It is not difficult to be a prophet when one has the means of fulfilling, or causing to be fulfilled one's own prophecy—and therefore, if this quasi war should be brought about, it will not be uncharitable to assume. that those who foresaw and foretold, having it in their power to avert it, are the real authors of it.

This assumption would be borne out more over, by the notorious fact, that the President and his advisers are most averse to any distribution or loaning of the surplus, and would prefer almost any alternative to being obliged to accede to that measure.

Under these circumstances, we are not surprised to find in the National Gazette the following paragraph:

'It is stated that Senor Gorostiza. the Mexican Envoy. is preparing to return home. the objects of his mission not having been accomplished' We heard yesterday from a pretty good source the same intelligence, but in a shape somewhat more decisive. namely, that the Mexican Envoy had made a peremptory demand for the recall of Gen. Gaines from Nacogdoches, and a compliance with this being refused on the part of this government, he had demanded his passports.

If this should prove true, we shall be in great danger of a war with Mexico, than which few could prove more disastrous to our commerce. With every thing at stake on our part, and nothing to lose—the U. States every thing to gain In such a war, Mexico has every thing to gain and nothing to lose-no! even glory. but an ally of the United States. and as for her commerce she has none, and pestilence around her sea coast secures from invasion in that quarter.
